Originally from Venezuela, Rita fell in love with arts at the age of four (4). Early in life, she participated in several painting training programs; following the example of one of her main influences, her mother, Gisela Urdaneta, who is also a very talented fine artist. Through her childhood and youth she grew up surrounded by arts and unavoidably, she became more and more passionate about her work.
Inspired by nature and colours, she expressed herself mainly through oil paintings.
After finishing secondary school, Rita enrolled herself into the School of Architecture of the University Rafael Urdaneta. At that point, she realized she wanted to pursue a career in fine arts; however, due to the lack of Art Schools available in the area, she enrolled into Graphic Design School. In 1998 she obtained her bachelor degree in Graphic Design while still pursuing a career in arts.
Relocated in Toronto, Ontario, in 2001 Rita continued her training in Oil Paintings, developing her own particular style; creating a perfect mix of passion, colors and stories; mirroring her artistic sensibility.
Her work at that time evolved into a more mature abstraction of her ideas and emotions keeping the colourful sense that had always characterized her paintings.
To date Rita is a successful well established fine artist with representation from Galleries in the northwest of the United States and in the Toronto area.
Her oil paintings on canvas have been displayed in numerous art gallery shows and in private exhibitions, and have consistently sold over the years.
“I do not always plan to produce art work about an specific subject. I instead let my current emotions at the time take control of my hands and reflect something unexpected. I do not sketch ideas or predispose myself in any way at all. I do not picture the final appearance of my work. Instead I let it surprise me. I just let the concept evolve as my feelings pave the way and then judge results at the end.
As my portfolio has developed over the years I’ve been able to identify a certain pattern in my work that translates into a mix of passion, colors, stories, happiness, experiences that mirror my artistic sensibility.
Over the years I’ve tried different aspects of visual appearance as impressionism, expressionism, figurative, etc. To date my art is defined as abstract art style. Bright colors and texture characterizes my paintings.
My work, for the most part, focuses on personal experiences, social matters, mother nature. These abstractions have different meanings on different people and that’s the beauty of arts for me. The interpretation of one piece of my work varies from person to person.
I never like to explain my work. I’m not the type of artist who has an explanation for everything. I let my paintings speak for themselves and I’m fine with any resolution it may have on people.
The technique I use is oil on canvas and my best friend in inspiration is the spatula. Sometimes I experiment with different techniques just to try and find an answer to something unknown. However I must say oil is my media of choice.
I do not have a favourite artist and my main inspiration is my mom, Gisela Urdaneta, who I watched paint ever since I reason, and who encourage me to do so.
My architectural and graphic design background reinforces my ability to paint. Day life experiences, either sad or happy, is what fuels my inspiration each and every day.
I am an observant of life.”
